TMC leader Mahua Moitra on Monday moved the Supreme Court challenging her expulsion from Lok Sabha in the cash-for-query scam.
Mahua Moitra of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) was expelled from the Lok Sabha for 'unethical conduct' on Friday, December 8, over her alleged involvement in the cash-for-query scam. Following a debate in Lok Sabha after the Parliamentary Ethics Committee probing the scam tabled its report, MPs voted in favour of her expulsion, even as Opposition leaders walked out in protest.
An angry Mahua stood on the steps outside the new Parliament, accusing the Ethics panel of a witch-hunt.
"The 17th Lok Sabha has indeed been historic. It is a House which saw the passage of the Women's Reservation Rescheduling Bill, but it has presided over the most tenacious witch-hunt of one of 78 women MPs. This Lok Sabha has also seen the weaponisation of a Parliamentary committee. Ironically, the Ethics Committee, which was set up to serve as a moral compass for Members; instead it has been abused today to do what it was never meant to do," Mahua said.
